NEW TOOLS:

FLASH MX

Bedford Interactive have been waiting (impatiently) for the release of an authoring system that would give us the facilities we need to teach dance with multimedia. Our first product, The Dance Disc (1989) fulfilled most of the requirements, but the technology on which it was based was discontinued by Philips (and replaced by a new system they called CD-i). Though we switched to the new technology, we lost some of the best pedagogic features that were available on Laser Disc, and had to

modify (and compromise) our approach. Nonetheless, our next release "The Wild Child" (on CD-i) was an immediate (and continuing) success. We re-authored this product a couple of years later (in line with new switches in the technology available), this time to CD-ROM, but we still did not get the functionality that we knew would allow radically new and powerful developments in the area.
Finally, after a couple of intervening products (based again on CD-ROM) we read about Flash MX. We could hardly believe our eyes - Macromedia seemed to be delivering the goods we had been waiting for. Proper video facilities were to be included, and most important, overlaid and synchronised animations were to be available for the first time since Laser Disc. We rapidly acquired the necessary software and started work. By autumn 2002 we had produced our first effort, but the promised compatibility between Macromedia Director and its cousin Flash MX was as yet unavailable, and many of our innovatory project work had to be shelved. By Spring 2003 the required cross-platform compatibility was implemented by Macromedia, and our first product Graham Technique: Analysis of Ten Basic Exercises used this successfully, though with a great deal of painful development work; due to the integration of three different authoring products.
In the Summer of 2003 we started work on Motifs for a Solo Dancer (based on the Dance Disc and the second in a series of products started by Graham Technique). This was to be authored entirely in Flash MX, taking full advantage of the new facilities provided by Macromedia (full screen, high quality video, overlays of animation and still graphics, outstanding levels of playback control) - and on October 19th the release of our best product yet, was announced.
