Bedford Interactive have now begun work on a new project in partnership with two UK dance companies (Northern Ballet and Phoenix Dance Theatre) to investigate the possibilities in using digital archiving techniques in the dance studio.
At the heart of this research is our latest creation, a software package called FORMotion.
This application was developed with funding from Yorkshire Forward as a video playback toolkit for dance educators and is now being utilised to create archives for major dance companies for the first time.
Filming is now underway at Northern Ballet to document and archive David Nixon's Hamlet which will be made available to the dance company, along with another major work, as a fully interactive video archive. |

Working alongside BILD Productions and Ryan J-W Smith, we aim to shoot and build pilot archives for both dance companies which will include both the filming of new works and the conversion of old archives into new ones.
FORMotion will allow the companies to house all their video in one place where all footage will be instantly accessible and under precise control. The software will allow them to compare any video clip with another, using a simple two-screen system.
We hope to expand this project to help more dance companies create such archives and to investigate how they get along with using the software in rehearsals, outreach projects and even in the creation of new work. More information on this project will follow soon as will a new website dedicated to FORMotion. Watch this space!
